2022 GMC Jimmy General Motors is looking for its own competitor to the Jeep Wrangler, and it could be the GMC Jimmy SUV, as illustrated above. The Jimmy name was previously used decades ago for GMC’s version of the Chevrolet Blazer. This new GMC model could arrive in the next few years with a starting price of around $30,000.
The revived 2022 GMC Jimmy could be GM’s answer to the wildly popular Jeep Wrangler and the upcoming Ford Bronco. This off-road-capable body-on-frame SUV will most likely call suburban roads home – not saying much for SUV-hungry buyers, who will forgo road compromises to enjoy its rugged off-road aura.
If that’s the case, the new model will likely take GM’s mid-size truck base, which also underpins the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups. GMC may not get too creative with the powertrain. It will use the same 3.6-liter V-6 as the pickup and – hopefully – a turbo-diesel.
Truck-based SUVs are rapidly evolving past their logical expiration date. The new Wrangler is enjoying strong sales despite high Jeep prices and even the vintage Toyota 4Runner is coming off dealer lots. The trail-happy model will also help legitimize GMC’s new off-road nameplate, the AT4, which it says will be applied to all its models in the near future.
Even if Jimmy himself doesn’t fare well, this model could become a trim level for the Canyon pickup, mirroring the ZR2 trim of its brother Chevrolet Colorado. Other rumblings suggest that GMC scrapped plans for a body-on-frame SUV in favor of a car-based subcompact crossover.
But given that such a model would overlap with the popular Buick Encore (and now Encore GX ), which shares showrooms with the GMC lineup, we think it’s unlikely. A new GMC off-roader could appear in the next few years, likely starting around $30,000.

Well, you know what they say – if the OEM can’t deliver, leave it to cyberspace and the aftermarket to fix things so quickly that the fans are blowing properly in an instant. This situation really applies to General Motors and its persistent refusal to provide a proper revival for fans of the Chevy K5 Blazer and GMC Jimmy to compete with the likes of Jeep’s Wrangler, Ford’s Bronco, and even Volkswagen’s upcoming reinvention of the Scout.
But don’t worry, there is a cool solution, at least as far as the GMC siblings are concerned.
Shortly after the year 2022 began, we heard that Oscar Vargas, a virtual artist better known as the web.artist20 on social media, and Flat Out Autos – a company based in Jonesboro, Arkansas – joined their CGI-to-reality powers to transform a GMC Sierra 1500 Range into a proper, modern GMC Jimmy 2022 two-door convertible SUV.
The two of them have been providing additional updates over the past few months to make sure everyone understands this is not just a vapor device and that the GMC pickup truck is indeed transformed into a fashionable off-road SUV with a removable top.
Now, finally, the first of only 20 examples are complete and eagerly await the 2022 SEMA Show and the legendary Battle of the Builders competition.

But what about the highlights? Well, it includes a GMC Sierra Single Cab long bed donor truck, short chassis, power-folding rear seats, and internal custom roof, as well as a host of aftermarket partners – from FOX and BDS Suspension to Nitto Tire and CORSA Performance, plus many others.
Unfortunately, no pricing details are available, but we do know that each unit will be customized to the exact customer specifications.
The 2022 SEMA show was a really cool event – and we’re really missing it. Just look at the poor Paris Motor Show 2022 and there are hardly any premieres worth it (other than the surprise cool Jeep Avenger 4×4 Concept)!
2022 GMC Jimmy SUV
If GMC makes a Jimmy in 2022, this is it. The world of small 2-door SUVs and small trucks is here in America. The market for them isn’t there, but that hasn’t stopped someone from building the updated GMC Jimmy of their dreams.
If you’re at SEMA this year, you can take a peek at this one, built by Flat Out Autos and based on the GMC Sierra.
Reaction to the truck was strong, and Flat Out says it “approached one million views in less than 24 hours with thousands of shares and hundreds of comments.” We think the truck looks amazing, and it’s pretty easy to see why, despite the disproportionate photos we have,” Flat Out said.
At the very least, the new Jimmy stays true to the original: A small pickup with plenty of seats and practicality, all wrapped up in a face that screams “GMC”. The front gets the same C-style headlights you’d find on a Yukon, Denali, or other similar products. The same goes for the AT4 badge.
That’s a very nice touch, as the AT4 model is the brand’s off-road-focused model. You can tell the difference thanks to the red tow hook you see here.
The truck is normally a two-seater, but the bench bolted to the floor under the B-pillar is foldable. It looks like Flat Out even retained the seat folding mechanism from modern GMCs. However, having a carpeted sleeping area did strike us as an odd choice. After all, this is a truck.
We’re not sure you’d want to remove the removable hardtop altogether, given the lack of a rear window or separation between you and the bed. Speaking of the bed, it appears to feature one of GMC’s MultiPro tailgates, which should add some practicality to the SEMA build.
The tailgate offers up to six configurations, including the ability to partially lower the gate to accommodate longer loads. Most of the interior comes out of a GM parts bin, as expected, and everything looks as if this truck came from the factory.
Flat Out has not said whether it will offer this conversion for sale or just a one-off for SEMA. It will likely gauge interest at the show and then make a decision on whether it is financially feasible to bring this conversion into production.
